    Extended emission around GPS radio sources

    Extended radio emission detected around a sample of GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources is discussed. Evidence for extended emission which is related to the GPS source is found in 6 objects out of 33. Three objects are associated with quasars with core-jet pc-scale morphology, and three are identified with galaxies with symmetric (CSO) radio morphology. We conclude that the core-jet GPS quasars are likely to be beamed objects with a continuous supply of energy from the core to the kpc scale. It is also possible that low surface brightness extended radio emission is present in other GPS quasars but the emission is below our detection limit due to the high redshifts of the objects. On the other hand, the CSO/galaxies with extended large scale emission may be rejuvenated sources where the extended emission is the relic of previous activity. In general, the presence of large scale emission associated with GPS galaxies is uncommon, suggesting that in the context of the recurrent activity model, the time scale between subsequent bursts is in general longer than the radiative lifetime of the radio emission from the earlier activity.Comment: 18 paged, 18 figures, accepted for publication on A&

    Computation of the Modes of Elliptic Waveguides with a Curvilinear 2D Frequency-Domain Finite-Difference Approach

    A scalar Frequency-Domain Finite-Difference approach to the mode computation of elliptic waveguides is presented. The use of an elliptic cylindrical grid allows us to take exactly into account the curved boundary of the structure and a single mesh has been used both for TE and TM modes. As a consequence, a high accuracy is obtained with a reduced computational burden, since the resulting matrix is highly sparse

    Constraining the evolution of young radio-loud AGN

    GPS and CSS radio sources are the objects of choice to investigate the evolution of young radio-loud AGN. Previous investigations, mainly based on number counts and source size distributions, indicate that GPS/CSS sources decrease significantly in radio power when evolving into old, extended objects. We suggest this is preceded by a period of increase in radio luminosity, which lasts as long as the radio source is confined within the core-radius of its host galaxy. We have selected a sample of nearby compact radio sources, unbiased by radio spectrum, to determine their radio luminosity function, size distribution, dynamical ages, and emission line properties in a complete and homogeneous way. First results indicate that the large majority of objects (>80%) exhibit classical GPS/CSS radio spectra, and show structures consistent with the being compact double, or compact symmetric objects.     Multi-frequency VLBA observations of compact sources from the Peacock & Wall catalogue

    VLBA observations are presented for 6 compact radio sources selected from the Peacock & Wall catalogue. From the new morphological and spectral information 2 objects that in the Peacock and Wall catalogue are flat spectrum (alpha < 0.5) sources, appear to be double sided objects with linear sizes of the order of one kpc. Three are core-jet sources and the last one is still an ``enigmatic'' object.     Physical parameters in the hot spots and jets of Compact Symmetric Objects

    We present a model to determine the physical parameters of jets and hot spots of a sample of CSOs under very basic assumptions like synchrotron emission and minimum energy conditions. Based on this model we propose a simple evolutionary scenario for these sources assuming that they evolve in ram pressure equilibrium with the external medium and constant jet power. The parameters of our model are constrained from fits of observational data (radio luminosity, hot spot radius and hot spot advance speed) versus projected linear size. From these plots we conclude that CSOs evolve self-similarly and that their radio luminosity increases with linear size along the first kiloparsec. Assuming that the jets feeding CSOs are relativistic from both kinematical and thermodynamical points of view, we use the values of the pressure and particle number density within the hot spots to estimate the fluxes of momentum (thrust), energy, and particles of these relativistic jets. The mean jet power obtained in this way is within an order of magnitude that inferred for FRII sources, which is consistent with CSOs being the possible precursors of large doubles. The inferred flux of particles corresponds to, for a barionic jet, about a 10% of the mass accreted by a black hole of 108M⊙10^8 {\rm M_{\odot}} at the Eddington limit, pointing towards a very efficient conversion of accretion flow into ejection, or to a leptonic composition of jets.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures.     Induced Compton Scattering in Gigahertz Peak Spectrum Sources

    We revisit the shocked shell model for the class of Active Galactic Nuclei known as Gigahertz Peak Spectrum sources, incorporating new observational data on the radiation brightness temperatures. We argue that in addition to free-free absorption, induced Compton scattering will also have an important effect in forming the ~GHz peak and in shaping the radio spectra that characterize these sources. Indeed, our arguments suggest that GPS sources may provide the first real evidence for the role of induced Compton scattering in extragalactic radio sources.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, AAS LaTeX style with epsf, to appear in ApJ Letter

    Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) sources are powerful extragalactic radio sources with angular dimensions of the order of a few arcseconds or less. Such a compactness is apparently linked to the youth of these objects. The majority of CSSs investigated so far have been known since the early 1980s. This paper is the first in a series where we report the results of an observational campaign targeted on a completely new sample of CSSs which are significantly weaker than those investigated before. The ultimate goal of that campaign is to find out how ``weak'' CSSs compare to ``strong'', classical ones, especially with regard to the morphologies.     Identifying Compact Symmetric Objects in the Southern Sky

    We present results of multifrequency polarimetric VLBA observations of 20 compact radio sources. The observations represent the northern and southern extensions of a large survey undertaken to identify Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) Observed in the Northern Sky (COINS). CSOs are young radio galaxies whose jet axes lie close to the plane of the sky, and whose appearance is therefore not dominated by relativistic beaming effects. The small linear sizes of CSOs make them valuable for studies of both the evolution of radio galaxies and testing unified schemes for active galactic nuclei (AGN). In this paper we report on observations made of 20 new CSO candidates discovered in the northern and southern extremities of the VLBA Calibrator Survey. We identify 4 new CSOs, and discard 12 core-jet sources. The remaining 4 sources remain candidates pending further investigation. We present continuum images at 5 GHz and 15 GHz and, where relevant, images of the polarized flux density and spectral index distributions for the 8 new CSOs and CSO candidates.Comment: accepted to Ap
